French Bets in Roulette & How to Play Them

French bets roulette

Some of the most popular bets in roulette are the French kind. After all, the casino game originates from France.

The European nation invented the game and are thus the experts. Learn to play the French way by mastering the three zones de la roulette française.

In this article, Roulette69.com explains Les Voisins Du Zero, Tiers Du Cylindre, and Les Orphelins.

But before we begin, make sure to nail our French roulette glossary.

Now, allez!

Les Voisins Du Zero

The first way to play an area of the wheel and have fun with real-money roulette concerns voisins du zero.

Les Voisins Du Zero is the largest French section on the roulette wheel. By wagering on the voisins, you are covering almost an entire half of the wheel – 17, to be exact. The selection starts at 22 and covers all the pockets through 25, including the single zero.

For those of you who can’t speak French, the voisins du zero meaning is neighbours of zero.

Additionally, the voisins du zero payout varies. This betting strategy involves multiple splits and corners, resulting in diverse returns.

Here’s an example of the voisins du zero payout:

  • Place 2 chips on 0-2-3
  • One chip on 4-7
  • 1 on 12-15
  • One on 18-21
  • Split 19-22
  • Corner bet on 25-29
  • Split on 32-35

So, the corner bet in the voisins du zero payout is 8:1 with the same 97.30% house edge.

Lastly, Les Voisins Du Zero is a traditional style of playing roulette, which is why pros prefer it. It is said that one cannot call themself a “real” player if they don’t bet on the voisins.

Tiers Du Cylindre

Le Tiers Du Cylindre is perhaps the most popular French roulette bet. Looking at the wheel, it covers the numbers between 27 and 33. However, as the order of the numbers on the table differs, be wary of the wheel for now only.

So, Le Tiers Du Cylindre includes 12 numbers, which is why it’s called “the third of the wheel”. Of course, we are disregarding the zero for the sake of this article.

When looking to play Le Tiers Du Cylindre, your options are as follows:

  • 5-8
  • 10-11
  • 13-16
  • 23-4
  • 27-30
  • 33-36

These “pairs” in roulette are called Splits or Chevals. Placing a split bet means that you’re splitting your stake between the two numbers. Therefore, the Le Tiers Du Cylindre payout is 17:1 (European roulette).

Players can combine split bets with any betting system they prefer. However, we would not recommend Martingale, as this strategy works best with even-money bets.

Les Orphelins

What is Orphelins in roulette?

Orphelins or orphans are the 8 numbers remaining on the roulette wheel when we subtract the voisins and tiers. The orphans are the following numbers: 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 17, 34, and 6, clockwise.

The third French section is the smallest and least famous. When playing Les Orphelins, punters combine a straight-up bet with splits most of the time. However, you can also bet 8 straight-up bets, too.

Jeu Zéro

The bonus section we decided to include is actually a part of the larger voisins du zero bet. The Jeu Zéro or zero game involves chevals (corners) on 0-3, 12-15, and 32-35, as well as a straight-up on 26. So, Jeu Zéro bet covers 7 numbers. A straight-up pays at 35:1.

Verdict

French bets are fun and old-school way to play real-money roulette. As such, it really lets the bettor connect to the game’s roots. Additionally, they are fairly simple to remember and are thus quite popular.
